JEHOVAH
INTRO
1. Read Genesis 2:4.
2. Jehovah is translated in our Bibles as "LORD." (so is capital GOD)
3. Elohim is translated in the Bible 2,570 times. Although Elohim is the first name of God
mentioned in Scripture, it is not the most frequently used name for God. Jehovah is used
6,823 times.
4. Here is a chart that will help you know which name for God is being used in various verses:
a) GOD or LORD = Jehovah
b) Lord = Adonai
c) God = Elohim
d) Lord GOD = Adonai Jehovah
e) LORD God = Jehovah Elohim
5. Jehovah comes from the Hebrew verb "havah."
a) means to be.
b) "One who is what He is."
6. Read Exodus 3:14,15.
a) "I AM THAT I AM" is what Jehovah is.
b) Jews have in the past
(and still do today) did not used this personal name for God, becauseit is too precious, holy, and personal. Out of respect they use "Lord" (Adonai).
c) Jehovah means the being who is absolutely SELF-EXISTENT, the One who in
Himself possesses essential life, and permanent existence.
7. Elohim may refer to the true or false gods.
a) Jehovah is never used to refer to false gods, for He is the one true God.
b) Elohim is the general name of God concerned with creation and preservation.

I. IT IS JEHOVAH WHO CONCERNS HIMSELF WITH REVELATION.
A. Note:
1. Jehovah reveals Himself as the TRUTH.
a) He is the truth revealing God.
2. Read Jeremiah 1:4,7,9,11.
a) It is never "thus saith God
(Elohim), but thus saith the LORD (Jehovah)."b) It is Jehovah who is revealing Himself to us.
3. Read Exodus 3:14-16.
a) When it came time to reveal Himself, he revealed Himself as Jehovah.
*******
II. JEHOVAH IS THE HOLY ONE.
A. Read Isaiah 6:2,3.
1. Who is holy?
(Jehovah)2. The Holy One.
B. Read Genesis 5:22-24.
1. Why does it say "Elohim?"
(God)2. Because Jehovah is too Holy for man to see. The Bible says that Jehovah cannot look
on sin. In what we call the Lords Prayer
(model prayer) we pray "hallowed bethy name." One of the first things we need to recognize about Jehovah is His
HOLINESS.
(Matthew 6:9)3. It is being predicted that AIDS will become the number one killer in the U.S. Some
are saying that it will become so widespread that we will not eat in restaurants
anymore, because we will not know if the people preparing the food have it or
not. AIDS is a judgment on sin from a HOLY GOD. Does God get pleasure out
of such a judgment? No, but He is HOLY, and His holiness must be satisfied first.

III. JEHOVAH LOVES RIGHTEOUSNESS.
A. Read Psalm 11:7.
1. Elohims love concerns only His relationship with man as CREATOR/PRESERVER.
This comes from His covenant with man
(see last weeks lesson, point III).2. Jehovah loves you differently; His love is:
a) based on the quality of your righteousness.
b) based on your moral and spiritual attributes.
c) This one is based on your fellowship with Him.
3. The Point: If God loves everyone equally
(and He does!), why do some seem more blessed than others?a) Jehovah loves you beyond the simple reason that He created you.
b) Jehovah loves you according to the righteousness, love, and devotion of His people.
c) Perhaps, it can be said this way: Jehovah loves you according to the quality of your likeness to Him. Jehovah loves for you to be and act LIKE HIM! This is called being and living HOLY. Come ye out and be ye separate from the world.
B. Read Deut. 6:4,5.
1. Here is where Jehovah is demanding your love (notice it is "LORD," not "God") with
all your heart, soul, and might.
2. Read Deut. 11:13,14.
a) This verse is saying if you love Jehovah like you are suppose to love Him, He will
bless you.
b) Its as if GOD is saying, "Ill love you more, if you will love Me more or if you will
live for Me more."
3. Read I Samuel 12:15.
a) Here is a promise that Jehovah will judge us IF we do not obey Him.
b) Notice that it is Jehovahs name used here all three times.
4. Psalm 95:10 says that Jehovah is grieved and wounded when we sin.
C. Illustration:
1. Read Genesis 6:5-7.
2. Did you see Jehovah is grieved?
3. Jehovah is not going to let man get by with sin.
4. Now notice 6:13, 14.
a) Elohim is used.
b) When Elohim says in verse 13 the same thing about destroying man as Jehovah
said in verse 7, there is a difference in the two.......WHY?
c) Notice that verse 14 mentions the ark; this is the COVENANT with man.
d) Elohim is the One who CREATED/PRESERVES man and keeps His covenant.
e) Jehovah is the One who pours out His wrath when man sins; Jehovah is grieved
when man sins.
D. Application:
1. When you want to be preserved and want to live a little longer, who do you call on?
ELOHIM
2. Notice Genesis 3:19.
a) This whole passage is Elohim speaking.
b) Here Elohim says, "Bring two."
3. Now notice Genesis 7:1,2.
a) This says that Jehovah says, "Bring seven."
b) WHY the difference?
4. Elohim is concerned with preserving His creation.
Jehovah is concerned with the vindication of His holiness and righteousness, because
sin must be atoned for. Only the CLEAN animals can be used. Jehovah was
looking ahead to Genesis 8:21 (notice the used of LORD...Jehovah).
5. Jehovah is concerned about SACRIFICE.

IV. JESUS CHRIST IS THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF JEHOVAH.
A. Read Hebrews 1:3.
1. Who is this Jehovah?
Answer: It is Jesus Christ.
(The Jehovahs Witness crowd will disagree with us on this. They maintain that
Jehovah created Jesus, but this is heresy and a lie from the Satan.)
2. Jesus was "the express image" of Jehovah!
3. Jesus said that if you have seen Him, you have seen the Father.
4. Jehovah is grieved with our sin.
B. Read Isaiah 53:4.
1. He must judge us in His holiness, but He loves us so much that he bruised Himself
for us.
2.Notice verse 10.
a) He pleased Himself: LORD.
b) That is how deeply Jehovah loves us!
