JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH

 

 

INTRO

1. Read Ezekiel 48:30-35.

2. The last phrase in verse 35, The Lord is there, is a name for God....

Jehovah-shammah

3. This passage is a description of the future city of Jerusalem.

4. Keep in mind that Ezekiel prophesied while outside the land, while in captivity in Babylon.

*He had been here for about 25 years.

*His main purpose was to keep before the exiles the national sins that

brought them into captivity.

*Ezekiel was one of the prophets that foretold the destruction of Jerusalem,

or Jehovah’s leaving.

5. Now in this chapter Ezekiel is telling of a city that is yet to come, where Jehovah is present.

I. THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS NAME

A. Note:

1. The one thing that had made Israel different from all other nations on earth

was Jehovah-shammah.

2. Read Exodus 3:13,14.

a) "I AM" emphasizes the presence of God and His eternal existence.

 

3. Read Exodus 33:14-16.

a) How will we know that the grace of God is with Israel?

b) By the presence of God.

4. If you are a Christian, then the very presence of God makes you separated:

a) Notice the word "separated" in verse 16.

b) Mark it down: Christians are to be different from the world!

c) Illustration: God was with them in the wilderness as a pillar of fire,

cloud, tabernacle, crossing the Red Sea.

He was there at the dedication of the Temple.

(II Chron. 7:1-3.)

II. THE NAME OF JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH IS FULFILLED IN JESUS CHRIST

A. Jesus Is the Fullness of God.

1. Read Colossians 1:19...

 

"For it pleased the Father that in him should all the fullness dwell..."

 

B. Jesus Is the Very Image of Jehovah’s Presence.

1. Read Hebrews 1:3...

 

"Who being the brightness of his glory,

and the express image of his person,

and upholding all things by the word of his power,

when he had by himself purged our sins,

sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;"

 

C. Jesus Is the Glory of the Presence of God.

1. Read John 1:14...

 

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,

(and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)

full of grace and truth."

III. THE PROMISE OF GOD’S PRESENCE TO THE CHURCH

 

A. We Have His Presence In Our Temple.

1. Read I Corinthians 3:16 says...

 

"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God,

and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?"

2. Read II Corinthians 6:16.

 

B. We Are The “Habitation of God.”

1. Ephesians 2:22 says...

 

"In whom ye also are builded together for

an habitation of God through the Spirit."

 

C. God’s Promise of His Presence Is To The End.

1. Matthew 28:20 says...

 

"...and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."

 

2. The only thing that makes us different from the world is the presence of

Jehovah-shammah.

IV. THE MEANING OF THIS PROPHECY AND ITS APPLICATION

 

A. Ezekiel’s Prophecy Looked To The New Jerusalem.

1. Read Revelation 21:1-8.

a) The Lamb is there. (Rev. 21:22)

b) God’s Presence shall light the city. (Rev. 21:23-25)

c) Jehovah-shammah’s throne shall be there. (Rev. 22:1)

 

B. We Are To Be Looking For That City, Living For That City, As Abraham Did.

1. Read Hebrews 11:10, 13-16.

2. They acted like pilgrims and strangers in this world. And this is how we

are to act as well.

 

C. We Can Only Be Right With God When His Presence Dwells With All His Blessings Upon Our Lives

1. God dwells in us today in the presence of the Spirit of Jehovah-shammah.

a) Read Ephesians 4:30-32.

2. We are not free to live as we please, dress as we please, talk as we please,

go where we please.....

IS ALWAYS PRESENT WITH US!
